One man is dead, and another injured, following a one-vehicle accident in the Town of Pine Grove on Saturday.
Deputies say the passenger, 52 year-old Gregory A. Turner, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver, 56 year-old Scott R. Sawyer, was flown to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield for treatment. His condition was not immediately known.
Both men are from Pine Grove. Neither, according to the sheriff’s office, was wearing a seat belt.
According to a news release from Sheriff Mike Lukas, deputies were called to the County Highway W scene, about one-half mile east of Taft Road, shortly before 1:30 PM on Saturday.
Initial reports indicate Sawyer lost control of his 2014 Ford Mustang while westbound on County Highway W. The vehicle entered a ditch and rolled, ejecting Turner from the vehicle.
The news release said excessive speed was a “major factor” in the crash, and drugs and alcohol are not thought to be factors. Toxicology tests are pending.
The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by Wisconsin State Patrol, Portage County Ambulances, Plover Rescue, Pine Grove Fire Department and the Spirit of Marshfield.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
