Pacelli 8th grade boys landed in ninth place out of 76 team at this year’s Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament
Two days of games on multiple courts at Pacelli, SPASH and UWSP gyms culminated with ‘Championship Sunday”.
Pacelli dropped their opening game to the eventual division winner, New Glarus, by a 41-30 score before bouncing back with successive wins over Gibraltar, 44-41 in overtime, and Cochrane-Fountain City, 49-36. Saturday’s nightcap game saw Pacelli fall to Darlington, 47-32.
Sunday’s Pacelli boys’ effort was rewarded with two more wins; defeating Fall Creek, 42-30, and finishing off their ninth place playoff with 33-30 win over Stratford.
“The tank was a little empty by the end of Saturday in that hard-fought loss (Darlington) but we competed head to head all day,” said Pacelli Coach Scott Miller. “This group has played together since fourth grade- it was their last tournament together and they really had a nice couple of days putting the cap on a really nice year.”
Division 1 had 30 teams entered with Brookfield Central winning the championship over Oshkosh West Sunday at 43-31. Host team Waupun took the Division 2 crown in 24 team competition, defeating Monona Grove, 54-41. Lakeside Lutheran downed Freedom 52-35 in Division 3 with 20 teams competing. In Division 4/5, New Glarus overcame a 34-17 halftime deficit to win 55-50.
