A Minnesota Ave. home sustained heavy damage in an early Monday morning fire.
Flames were visible from the attached garage when crews responded to a home on the 3400 block of Minnesota, just one block past the Church St. intersection, around 3:45 AM. Fire officials say all occupants escaped without injuries.
Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Davis said “three or four” occupants were sleeping inside the home, while an unknown number of people were sleeping inside an RV parked in the front driveway. Davis said those inside the RV had been participating in the annual 90FM Trivia contest, which ended Sunday at midnight.
The occupants were alerted to the blaze by a passing UPS driver.
“He (the driver) said it looked like a red flashing light from in the garage and said, ‘Gee maybe I ought to go check it out’,” Davis said, adding the driver then woke the occupants and called 911.
Davis said fire crews were “still digging out the garage” Monday morning, and noted while the investigation had just begun, the RV had been plugged in via an extension chord inside the garage.
Metro Fire responded to the call.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation. More as we have it.
