Dozens of officials from city and county government, as well as some members of the public, attended a Monday morning farewell for outgoing interim Mayor Gary Wescott.
Wescott has been interim mayor since former Mayor Andrew Halverson’s departure last December.
The air was light as Wescott joked with longtime past and present co-workers, including interim Police Chief Marty Skibba, Portage Co. Sheriff Mike Lukas and several other police officers, as well as department heads, sitting and newly-elected alders and former City Attorney Louis Molepske, Sr.
“We all know why we’re here today,” Wescott told the group. “You heard there was cake.”
Wescott formally steps down from his pro tem service in the mayor’s office at midnight, bringing to close his time as the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history.
