Students, staff and parents are gearing up for the 12th Annual 5K Tiger Trek at Washington Elementary.
The event, held on May 16, includes a the regular 5K run, a one- mile run and an adaptive race which accommodates those with special needs.
A group of sixth graders at the school founded the first Tiger Trek, which was designed to fund improvements to the school’s playground. The event has grown so large that a group of parents now run the event.
Funds raised during the event benefit the school’s PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization) as well as continued maintenance of the playground. The school also donated 10 percent of all funds raised to one local cause each year. This year, the school’s community cause is Backpacks of Hope, a year-round program providing backpacks filled with healthy snack food items for students who need them.
By maintaining the field, groups like Special Olympics, FastPitch, and Portage Co. Youth Soccer are able to use the school’s track and field for training purposes at no charge.
Registration for Tiger Trek is available at http://e-registerpro.com/en/event/1/Tiger-Trek. The group can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.
