For the City Times
Stevens Point will celebrate Arbor Day during a special event on Tuesday, May 5 in front of SPASH.
Mayor Wiza, city forestry personnel and students from SPASH and Mid-State Technical College’s urban forestry program will plant ten trees beginning at 10:45 AM.
The trees will be planted in the city boulevard in proximity to overhead utility lines. Wisconsin Public Service is funding the tree planting.
The National Arbor Day Association has recognized the City of Stevens Point as a Tree City USA for the 34th year, and has awarded Stevens Point its 14th Tree City USA Growth Award. To qualify to be a Tree City USA, municipalities must have a Tree Board, adopt a Community Tree Ordinance, have Community Forestry Program, and have an Arbor Day Celebration.
The Growth Award was created to recognize environmental improvements and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities.
