Joan C. Erickson, age 90 of Plover, died Monday, May 4, 2015, at Ministry St. Michael’s Hospital.
The daughter of the late Henry and Catherine (Groff) Ebsen, she was born on January 30, 1925 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, the third child of fourteen children.
On August 2, 1945, Joan married Benjamin Erickson at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids. After 44 years of marriage, Ben passed away in 1989. They enjoyed many happy years of traveling, camping, boating and building two homes with their family.
Joan graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943. During World War II, she was a “Gandy Dancer” for the railroad keeping the railroad beds in shape. Joan started her career working for her parent’s family business, Ebsen’s Greenhouse, Wisconsin Rapids. She then took a position as Personnel Manager at Woolco Department Store, Wisconsin Rapids. From 1972 to 1981, Joan was employed at Sentry Insurance in Stevens Point, WI.
After her retirement from Sentry Insurance, Joan enjoyed living on the Wisconsin River south of Plover and spending winters in Florida. An avid artist, she completed dozens of oil paintings for family and friends. Being an “Ebsen”, she loved flowers and raising plants. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called her “Grandma GiGi” and they were her pride and joy. Joan lived at Oakridge, Stevens Point for the past several years and enjoyed the community and the many activities, especially BINGO, prayer groups, sewing lap robes for other residents, baby blankets for Ministry St. Michael’s hospital and her many other craft projects.
An active member of St. Bronislava Catholic Church, she was involved in various groups including the St. Bronislava Choir. She was a former member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
Joan will be greatly missed by her four children; Eric (Marilyn) of Mosinee, Mark (Cheryl) of Swansea, Massachusetts, Caryn Neibauer of Beaver Dam and Joan Mours (Ron) of Wisconsin Rapids; 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren, as well as her brothers, Jim (Patricia) of Menominee Falls and Mark (Betty) of Minneapolis and her sister Barbara Dunn (Jim) of Wisconsin Rapids.
Greeting her arrival to be with her savior, Jesus Christ, were Catherine & Henry Ebsen (her parents), Ben Erickson (her husband) and her siblings – Paul, Valentina Langlois, Henry, Catherine (Betty) Miner, Rita Heath, Donald, Jerome, Beatrice, Ronald and Richard.
Visitation will be at 9 AM. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Saint Bronislava Church, Plover with Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill officiating.
Burial will follow at the Rest Lawn Cemetery on Hwy 54, Grand Rapids. Pisarski Community Funeral Home, Plover is honored to be serving the family.
