Leilani Messer’s yoga studio looks like most, with smooth wooden floors and high windows- but this one heats up to a toasty 100 degrees.
Humble Warrior Hot Yoga studio opened last month in downtown Stevens Point, but Messer has been on a two-year journey to see her passion become a reality.
Messer discovered the benefits of hot yoga while stationed in the Air Force in Las Vegas. The name of her studio is a nod to both the practice- which has a pose called “Humble Warrior”- but also to Messer’s military service.
“I am a warrior,” she said.
“I was doing a lot of physical things and having issues with my knees and hips,” said Messer. “Hot yoga helped me build strength and maintain the flexibility that I needed. And it was something that I found I couldn’t live without.”
Messer said the heating system in the studio’s ceiling is different from the forced-air, or steam, heat which can create humidity
“This room allows your muscles to get loose faster and helps with flexibility, without forcing you to breath in a lot of humid air,” she said.
Messer trained as an instructor during an intensive, month-long training session at Maui Yoga Shala in Maui, Hawaii.
When she moved to Stevens Point with her boyfriend two years ago, the two purchased and remodeled the building which used to house the Dash of Delicious bakery.
The business features a single studio which can accommodate up to 12 students at a time, as well as a small reception area and two small dressing rooms.
Messer teaches a variety of classes mostly focusing on Vinyasa style yoga, which is a combination of breathing and poses that flow together in a series of exercises. In addition to regular classes held in the morning and evening, she also offers private sessions. She also has a special rate for small groups with a program called “Me and My Omies.”
Messer’s family is from Guam, and she has since lived in Florida, Hawaii and Las Vegas. She said her first Wisconsin winter was a shock to her system.
“The studio helps,” said Messer. “I can teach a class and imagine I am doing yoga on a beach.”
