Mayor Mike Wiza on Tuesday confirmed a Belgium-based company that specializes in corrugated board and core winding is opening its first U.S. production facility in Stevens Point.
VPK Packaging first opened its doors in Belgium in 1936. The company is shipping its specialized machinery to Central Wisconsin from Germany.
According to a news release from the company, the company will begin installing equipment during the last two weeks of May. The factory will begin production in June.
The new plant will meet the demand for cores used in foil and paper industries, focusing on local markets.
The company is moving into the former Vetter Manufacturing Co. building on Wood Street.
“They’ve been working on it for a while,” Wiza said on Tuesday. “There is a job creation element to this, but they really don’t need any city approval because [the property] is in an industrial area, so we don’t have a lot of information on it yet.”
