Stevens Point has been nominated to win money for a new dog park.
Sponsored by PetSafe® brand, the Bark for Your Park contest “encourages communities of pet professionals, owners, shelters, welfare groups and local civic officials to partner together”, according to a news release.
The community with the most votes will win $100,000 to build a new dog park. Runners-up in each small, medium and large population category will also win $25,000.
The current Stevens Point Dog Park opened in the summer of 2010 thanks to a grassroots effort of several local residents, including Mayor Mike Wiza- who at the time was an alderman- and former Alderwoman Mary Stroik. The park is 30 acres and located on top of the city’s former landfill, and was constructed using $40,000 in donations.
Contest winners are chosen by popular vote. Over 300 communities have already been nominated as of Tuesday, when Stevens Point had garnered 24 votes. Voters can cast their ballot once per day. The contest closes July 22.
Bark for your Park is hosted by PetSafe, the largest manufacturer of electronic dog training equipment in the United States. PetSafe has sponsored the contest since 2011.
