The Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office confirms a 55-year-old man is suspected of shooting his 44-year-old wife on Wednesday.
In a news release from the sheriff’s office, the suspect in Wednesday afternoon’s Bancroft shooting has been identified as Larry Sanchez. The victim was identified as Lisa Sanchez, who was already dead from a gunshot wound when deputies arrived on the scene.
Sanchez’s body was discovered in a home next door to where she and the suspect lived on the 8300 block of Division Street in the Town of Pine Grove, which is located within the boundaries of the unincorporated Village of Bancroft.
Larry Sanchez had barricaded himself inside his home following the murder, and throughout a standoff with law enforcement which lasted just over three hours.
Law enforcement negotiators were unable to persuade Sanchez to surrender himself, and the Portage Co. Special Response Team (SRT) forcibly entered the home shortly before 4 PM and took Sanchez into custody without further incident.
Sanchez is currently in custody at the Portage Co. Jail. Formal homicide charges are pending.
Chief Deputy Dan Kontos said more information would be made available on Thursday after 11 AM.
Along with the sheriff’s office, the Stevens Point and Plover Police departments, Wisconsin State Patrol, Portage County EMS, and Bancroft-Pine Grove Fire and EMS departments all responded to the scene.
The Portage County Coroner’s Office and Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Lab are assisting with the investigation.
