A suspect is in custody following an alleged shooting reported late Wednesday morning on Division St. in Bancroft.
The first reports of a possible shooting were made to law enforcement around 11 AM.
Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas said one person was shot and wounded but their medical condition is unknown at this time. Identities of the suspects and victims were not readily available.
It is not confirmed that the suspect in custody was the shooter. The relationship between the suspect and gunshot victim has not yet been established, Lukas said.
The male suspect barricaded himself in a Division Street home. The county’s Special Response Team had to forcibly remove the man, who was placed in custody about 3:50 PM.
“Our hostage negotiation team actually came in and were in contact with the individual,” said Lukas. “They did a great job, but it was law enforcement tactics that brought him out.”
Lukas added no injuries were sustained during the apprehension.
“We had assistance from the state patrol, Plover Police Department, Stevens Point Fire Department and numerous other agencies,” said Lukas. “We’ll be continuing the investigation through the state and through our detective bureau.”
Police cordoned off much of the surrounding street and evacuated the neighborhood surrounding the crime scene. The Division St. scene will be closed until at least Thursday morning, Lukas said.
Lukas said the Bancroft 4-year-old kindergarten school was evacuated without incident, and there is no danger to any residents at this time.
