Stevens Point police officers responded to an alarm call on Sunday afternoon and made a surprising discovery- an unattended firearm.
Officers responded to the alarm at Skyward on Industrial Park Drive in Stevens Point at 5:33 PM. Witnesses on the scene said they saw officers with drawn weapons patrolling the grounds.
SPPD Sgt. Ben Uitenbroek said after checking the parameter and exits for signs of forced entry, they cleared the building. Then, along with a representative of Skyward, officers searched for signs of damage or missing property. Uitenbroek said nothing appeared to have been disturbed inside the building.
But while checking the outside of the building, officers discovered a cased firearm, with ammunition, lying on the ground. The make and model of the firearm was not immediately available.
“We are in the process of investigating facts related to the firearm and possible owners,” Uitenbroek said. “Reasonably, there’s a cause for concern for neighboring business and residents at this point, but no one is in danger that we know of.”
Uitenbrobk said officers we on the scene for about an hour. No injuries or damage was reported.
