A day before his trial was to begin on charges of sexual assault, criminal trespass, theft and burglary, a Tanzanian man pleaded guilty to amended charges of 3rd degree sexual assault and two counts of criminal trespass.
Nelly Makalin, 32, was charged after several residences near the UWSP campus were broken into, with one student reported waking up to find a man in her bedroom at a Briggs St. residence. That woman was then sexually assaulted.
Detectives with the Stevens Point Police Department investigating the assault- as well as related break-ins on College Ave. and Division St.- identified Makalin after a witness matched the description of the suspect with an individual named “Nellie” who had reportedly been harassing a bartender at a local tavern.
Malakin was found with several items reported stolen in the break-ins in his possession, according to police reports.
As part of the plea agreement, the charges of theft, burglary and disorderly conduct were dismissed. Malakin is facing a 10 year prison sentence for the sexual assault.
Makalin is scheduled for sentencing on August 25.
