For the City Times
The Stevens Point 11U baseball team placed 4th this weekend during the Larry Fritsch Memorial Tournament.
They opened up Friday night against Colombus and came to play in all facets of the game. Behind the strong pitching of Damian Cejka and Nick Helms, Point took the opener 6-2. Nathan Dombrowski had the hot bat for the team.
Saturday morning they faced a Neenah team that ended up having one hot inning. That six-run inning would prove costly to the boys as they ended up losing 7-6. That afternoon they came back with force and beat D.C. Everest. The team was lead by Colby Hintz, who pitched a solid three innings. Helms was called out to finish the game and held the Evergreens in a nail biter 7-4. Ben Raczek and CJ Stankowski had timely hits to put runs on the board.
The squad would have to wait until the end of the day to find out they would take the #2 seed in the bracket as Columbus and Neenah went down to the wire, with Neenah coming from behind to win via California rules.
In their final game, Stevens Point faced Shawano. Shawano jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and held on for the win. Point fought back hard as Clayton Chojnacki drove in a run in the second inning. Cameron McCarrier hit a deep bomb to center field to cut the score in half.
The boys head to Little Chute this next weekend.
