A Portage Co. judge on Monday ordered a competency hearing for a man accused of shooting his wife.
Larry Sanchez, Jr., 58 of Bancroft appeared before Judge Thomas Edgon via video conference.
Sanchez is accused of shooting his wife, then holding a nearly four-hour standoff with law enforcement on June 3.
Sanchez allegedly shot his 44-year-old wife in their home following their separation. According to court records, Sanchez admitted to the shooting in a text to his son but was unaware of her death at the time of the standoff.
Eagon ordered the competency hearing at the request of Sanchez’ defense attorney, Emily Nolan-Pluchak.
Sanchez has been charged with 1st degree intentional homicide in the death of his wife, along with one count of 1st degree reckless homicide, homicide while intoxicated with the use of a deadly weapon and one count of failure to comply with police officers.
He remains in custody in the Portage County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.
