Anyone can be a superhero; just visit the library.
The Village of Plover Library is giving children ages six and up the opportunity to create their own superheroes this summer as part of their Book Adventures summer reading program.
“Our goal is to tie literature with all kinds of fun extension activities,” said Laura Fuller, branch manager for the Plover, Rosholt and Almond libraries. “It’s still very much literature based but it allows us to add a different kind of a twist and reach kids who may not be 100 percent readers and still get them interested in books.”
She said that it’s important to connect outside activities with reading in order to cement children’s interest in reading.
The Super Hero Academy covers two afternoons beginning at 2 PM on Wednesday July 8 and 15.
“Over the course of the two weeks they’ll get to do things like create their own cape and decorate and create their own mask,” said Fuller. “Then their will be super hero challenges like walking on kryptonite.”
The summer library program is called Every Hero has a Story and the Academy is the next event in the summer long heroics themed activities for children.
The Portage County Public Library and its branches are part of a larger network of libraries called the South Central Library System which chooses the summer reading theme for its libraries. What the individual libraries do with the theme is up to them.
Superhero themed books including a child-friendly version of Batman’s origin will bring in the bookish part of the adventure.
The first book adventure, Every Hero Has a Story, was on June 17 and Full said 15 children participated.
“That was a theme of all different kinds of heroes” said Fuller. “One story that got read aloud was a Greek myth. Then there was a tall tale based on Americana. It’s call “The Dust Devil” about a Paul Bunyan kind of character only they’re a female.”
Registration for the Superhero Academy began Wednesday, June 24. There is no limit to participants and no cost. Call or visit the Village of Plover Library to register.
The library is located at 2151 Roosevelt Dr. in Plover.
