Assistant District Attorney David Knaapen will announce his bid for the seat of Portage County Circuit Court Judge on Wednesday, July 1st at 5 PM on the steps of the Portage County Courthouse.
Knaapen is running for the seat vacated by Judge John V. Finn, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
Knaapen has over 30 years of legal experience in both the public and private sectors. He has served as an Assistant District Attorney for over 11 years with the Portage County DA’s office.
From 1993 to 2002, Knaapen served as a Wisconsin State Public Defender staff attorney. He is a proven trial attorney with extensive experience in civil and criminal cases, CHIPS and delinquency cases as both a prosecuting attorney and as a defense attorney, OWI, child abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, armed robbery, drug overdose homicides, battery, drug cases and homicides
“I feel that my work in both prosecuting and defending cases, combined with my knowledge of state statutes and courtroom procedure gives me the depth and breadth of experience needed for this judicial seat,” Knaapen said in a statement. “Circuit court judges are trial judges; litigants and attorneys expect their judges to know the law and the rules of evidence. I bring over 30 years of trial experience to the position of circuit court judge.”
