A Rhinelander man is facing misdemeanor theft charges after he and an accomplice allegedly stole money from the tip jar at Polito’s Pizza on Saturday night.
Officers from the Stevens Point Police Department were called to the popular Main Street pizzeria after employees reported the theft. According to witnesses, two males entered the shop and while one man distracted the employees, the other grabbed the tip jar.
The jar contained approximately $60 in cash and change and was later found empty in the restroom.
Later in the evening a Polito’s employee recognized one of the suspects on a downtown street, where police made contact with the man identified as Bryant Smith, 22, of Rhinelander.
Smith had $31 in small bills and change on him. His accomplices’ whereabouts were not immediately known.
Smith is currently on probation and was arrested on suspicion of being a party to theft and bail jumping. He appeared via video conference before Judge Thomas Eagon on Monday and has been issued a $1,000 signature bond.
Smith is due back in court for an initial appearance on July 13.
