For The City Times
The Saint Michael’s Foundation announced today new grant recipients for programs and services that support patients served at Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital and Ministry Medical Group.
The following programs will receive grants:
Oncology Gas Card Program
One of the goals of Ministry Health Care is to keep quality care close to home. But for some specialty services, like radiation oncology, home is a little further away. Through funding support of Saint Michael’s Foundation, the radiation oncology department of Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point is able to provide gas cards to patients in need who travel 60 miles or more for their radiation therapy treatment. The oncology gas card program began in 2011, and as of April 2015, over $2500 in gift cards has been provided to patients.
CPR Equipment for Certifying Area School Coaches
Ministry Sports Medicine will purchase CPR equipment for trainers to certify coaches in CPR/AED/First Aid at area senior and junior high schools. This training has made a difference when a month following CPR/AED training and certification with Ministry Sports Medicine, certified athletic trainer Linda Haller, a local high school coach, was able to use AED training to revive a man who collapsed at church.
Hmong Bike-Ped Community Map
An ethnographically-based bicycle/pedestrian activity map of Stevens Point will be funded in part by Saint Michael’s Foundation. The Bike-Ped community map aims to engage the Hmong community by creating a culturally relevant approach to physical activity. The collaborative efforts of Portage County Can Coalition and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will engage Hmong families of Stevens Point to provide insights about the challenges of being physically active and identifying culturally relevant resources to support them in their physical activity goals.
Program coordinators envision the success of the project to be applied to similar health promotion resources for other ethnic minority and under-represented populations within the Stevens Point and surrounding communities.
