Stevens Point firefighters say they’re looking to do a better job of spreading the word on this year’s Fill the Boot campaign.
The fundraiser puts firefighters and EMTs alongside traffic at the intersection of Division and Main streets, boot in hand, over a two-day period soliciting passing motorists for donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
During last year’s fundraiser, firefighters raised a record of more than $10,000 from passersby- some who donated without even realizing why.
“This year we’re looking to get the word out a little bit better of why we’re on the street collecting the money,” said Tom Wastart, firefighter and paramedic.
“We also want to let people know who the money goes to and where the money goes,” he said.
Department officials say their new goal for 2015 is $12,000.
The 2015 Fill the Boot campaign will be held on July 23 and 24, when firefighters will be on the corner of Main and Division streets from 12:30 through 5 PM.
The MDA is a nonprofit group working to find a cure for muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases.
