To the Editor-
This Independence Day I watched the Stevens Point parade and in the midst of veterans, flags waving, and cars decked out in red, white and blue, there came the two political parties. I was sadly disappointed to hear booing as one of the political parties passed.
I can understand favoring one political party over another. We are all entitled to our own view, but this is an Independence Day parade. It is celebrating America’s freedom and honoring those who fought for it. We are one nation, one people.
When you boo a political party at such an event, it is disrespectful not only to the people but also to the veterans. That behavior takes the focus off of honoring the sacrifices made for our freedoms and the celebration of that freedom and puts it on politics and some of the ugliness that can come with it.
For when you boo a political party, you are not just booing ideas but also people, people who deserve respect as much as you do. We are celebrating liberty, and freedom, on Independence Day, respectfulness should be a part of our celebration.
