Top-notch safety instruction and open communication are among the reasons two local fire departments were honored Monday for their partnerships with the Stevens Point School District.
Stevens Point and Plover fire departments were presented with a plaque of appreciation at Monday’s school board meeting. Outgoing Superintendent Attila Weninger said the district’s elementary schools in particular benefit from early fire prevention education.
“Every year the fire departments visit…and provide fire safety instruction, demonstrate fire safety equipment and allow our students to see and learn the many features of the fire trucks that are brought to the schools,” Weninger said.
Weninger also mentioned the Explorer’s Program offered at SPFD, which allows young men and women to gain experience in fire and EMS service prior to determining their individual career choices. The departments also provide annual fire safety inspection.
Stevens Point Fire Chief Bob Finn called the recognition “an honor and privilege”.
