Patricia Anne Shippy lost her 16 year fight against lymphoma and her 30 year challenge of crippling rheumatoid arthritis on July 10, 2015.
Born 84 years ago on August 6, 1931, the daughter of William and Freda Hackney in Stevens Point. She lived and loved her hometown her whole life. Early in life she learned to be independent and hard-working. Often letting people she knew that she got her first “paying job” at 14 years old.
In June of 1950 Patricia married Myron Shippy. Patricia became a mother of four children:
Peter (Barb Mattson) Shippy, Stevens Point
Patti (Tom) Ksionsk, Eagle River
Susan (James) Haessly, Junction City
Shawn (Thom) Dobeck, Fort Collins, CO
Caregiving came natural to Patricia. Her friendly, humble home always had its doors open to all the neighborhood children as well as “coffee clutching” friends. She was always willing to go rollerskating, stock-car races, or just “ride around” with extra children and friends in tow.
Patricia’s caregiving sent her to St. Michaels Hospital and later River Pines Healthcare Center for many years as a CNA. She kept contact with some of those co-workers to the end with phone calls and restaurant lunches.
Patricia “retired” to a different caregiver. She was blessed with 7 grandchildren:
Maggi (Jens) Rademacher, Gehrden, Germany
Brandi (Derek) Bannach, Waupaca
Seth (Lindsay Rouse) Shippy, Stevens Point
Josh (Heather) Haessly, Oshkosh
Amanda Rouse, Stevens Point
Marti (Abby McQuire) Ksionsk, Chicago
Patricia taught her grandchildren to “be yourself” and don’t be too serious or too silly. They made her proud of each and every one of them. 7 must be Patricia’s lucky number, she was blessed again with 7 great-grandchildren:
Every holiday was filled with gawdy decorations, yummy treats, and “celebration mail” for her 7 “favorite kids” – they sure will miss her.
Patricia got to enjoy traveling in earlier years. She often shared memories of Vegas, Colorado, Florida, New York, as well as the Great Lakes and visits Up North. She embraced extended family including “friend or foe” on her trips and cottage stays.
The past 7 years had Patricia in her caregiving position again, she had to give up traveling and her social life to care for Myron. A victim of Alzheimers. Patricia has kept him safe and happy, in spite of her own challenges of lymphoma and RA. He will be lost without her.
As well as husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren Patricia is survived by:
her sister: Maxine (James) Devane, Rhode Island her brother: William (Doris) Hackney, Stevens Point
and many close friends, especially Diane Frost, an angel that helped them “stay at home”
She was preceded in death by her parents and loving daughter-in-law Barb Shippy.
Patricia requested cremation and to have no public services.
Her family also wishes to acknowledge Meals on Wheels and all the staff at St. Joseph Hospital and Clinic in Marshfield.
