A 66-year old man is facing theft charges after an incident at The Coffee Studio last Friday.
Officers from the Stevens Point Police Department were dispatched to 1100 Main St. for a call involving a stolen backpack. A customer there reported momentarily leaving his table at the downtown coffee shop, and when he returned his backpack containing a laptop computer was gone.
Police found an individual nearby, identified as Donald Coulthurst, who was carrying the stolen backpack, with the victim’s property still inside.
Coulthurst told officers he mistakenly picked up the backpack, thinking it was his, but he was carrying two backpacks when stopped and questioned. He told police that backpacks were very similar and that somehow, his property got into both backpacks.
He was arrested on suspicion of theft and taken to the Portage County Jail.
He appeared via video before Judge Edward Zappen, who ordered a $1,000 signature bond. Coulthurst is to have no contact with the Coffee Studio or the victim.
His next court appearance is set for August 24.
