Nick Burant, 86, of Rosholt, passed away in the early morning hours of Sep. 18, 2015, at the Faustina Home in Rosholt, surrounded by loved ones.
He was born on Dec. 14, 1928, the son of Walter and Regina (Weronke) Burant on the farmstead he would continue to live and work throughout his life. Nick married Phyllis Pehowski on Nov. 11, 1961, at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Rosholt and the couple had three children.
He operated a Holstein dairy farm. In the true spirit of a family farm, he proudly drove his John Deere tractor with his children and nephews working beside him. Upon his retirement in 1992, he converted his farmland to forest.
His interests in his younger years included baseball and bowling. During the 1970-71 season, he bowled two perfect games, earning him recognition in the league’s 600 club. Throughout his life, Nick enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was known for his skill at catching pan fish with his cane pole. He spent many hours with his grandchildren putting worms on hooks and taking tiny fish off hooks without a complaint. Gardening was Nick’s favorite hobby. After he retired, many family, friends and neighbors benefitted from his bountiful harvest. There was always “great plenty” of sweet corn, beans, tomatoes and onions for all.
A favorite game of Nick’s was the card game “golf.” He learned the game from his long-time caregiver and friend, Judy Rogers, whose attentive care and loving friendship brought a smile to his face and peace-of-mind to his family.
Nick enjoyed his final months at the Faustina Home on Merryland Road, where the caring staff provided the care and quality of life that he needed. A special thank-you to Amy for the long hours she spent by his side. Nick’s good-natured demeanor and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include three children, Michelle (Kevin) Graf, Kevin (Amy) Burant and Jodi (Jeff Nelson) Burant; three grandchildren, Garett Graf, Grace Graf and Sophie Burant; sister, Janet Chojnacki; and sister-in-law, Sylvia Burant. In addition to his parents and wife, Nick was preceded in death by three sisters, Harriet Domaszek, Florence Simonis and Bernice Skibba; and two brothers, Ted and Walter Burant.
The Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sep. 22, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Polonia. The Rev. Gregory Michaud will officiate. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 12 noon until the time for Mass. A luncheon will be served at the parish following the Mass.
