David George Kazemba, age 72, of Stevens Point, passed away on November 6, 2015 while surrounded by his loving family.
Dave, along with his identical twin brother, Daniel, was born on June 17, 1943 in Heron Lake, MN to the late Deane and Mary (Zallaha) Kazemba. He was one of six boys and grew up farming and getting into mischief with his brothers.
Dave entered the U.S. Navy in 1961 and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis on the USS Wasp as an electrician. He was honorably discharged in 1964. Following his time in the service he graduated from Milwaukee Technical College with an Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
Dave enjoyed the time he spent working at Lullaby Furniture and Donaldson Company, but found his true passion as a local handyman. “Handyman Dave” had the reputation of being able to fix anything.
In his free time, he loved carpentry, fishing – especially for bullheads, listening to music, traveling, dancing, going to movies, playing cards, cribbage, dominos, and swimming. As anyone who knew him could attest, he always needed to keep himself busy with new projects and hobbies.
He was always known for his willingness to help others. In addition to helping out family and friends, he spent much of his time volunteering in the community. Dave spent time as the chair for Alcoholics Anonymous and was very proud of his sobriety. He also counseled troubled youth at juvenile detention centers and volunteered for the Salvation Army.
Dave was a truly sweet person with a carefree spirit and a big heart. His stubbornness drove him to strive for perfection in his work and his perseverance helped him overcome life’s obstacles. He most certainly marched to the beat of his own drum and left a smile on the face of anyone who knew him. Everyone has a memorable and humorous “Dave Story.”
Survivors include his four children: Kendra (Joseph) Buchholz of Seattle, WA, Cole Kazemba (Isabella Yu) of San Francisco, CA, Craig Kazemba of Milwaukee, and Laura Page of Austin, TX; and three of his brothers: Duane (Connie) Kazemba of Andover, MN, Dennis Kazemba of Fresno, CA, and Daryl (Betty) Kazemba of Hernando, MS.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two of his brothers: Daniel and Donald.
Over the years, Kendra and Cole served as Dave’s source of joy in life, his strength through hard times, and his best friends. The three of them were extremely close and shared daily phone calls and frequent visits that will be sorely missed.
A memorial gathering will be held at Boston Funeral Home in Stevens Point on Wednesday, November 11th, from 4-8pm. A funeral service and burial will take place on Friday, November 13th, at 2pm in his hometown of Windom, MN.
