A series of workshops at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point offers community members opportunities to motivate themselves and others, find solutions for the future and become more mindful for effective change.
The Motivational Coaching Workshop Series will be offered at 9 a.m. Fridays, Feb. 5, March 4 and April 29, sponsored by the College of Professional Studies and Continuing Education and Outreach Office at UW-Stevens Point.
“These three one-credit workshops offer life skills for both your professional and personal life,” said Celine Kline, an assistant professor of health promotion and human development. The nationally recognized speakers will help guide participants in proactive conversation, empowerment, solution-focused thinking and mindfulness to help in all aspects of life, she said.
“Anyone in the community can benefit – as a student, as a parent, as an employee or employer,” Kline said. “Once you’ve learned these skills, you can go home or to work and use them right away.”
The series includes:
· “Motivational Interviewing for Clinical, Organizational and Leadership Success” will be offered Feb. 5 by Laura Saunders, MSSW. She will discuss concepts and skills in motivational interviewing, a goal-oriented, client-centered counseling style. Saunders has provided this training to physicians, nurses, medical students, psychologists, treatment providers, social workers, physical therapists and health educators for 20 years.
· “Solution-Focused Brief Coaching” will be presented March 4 by Yvonne Dolan, an acclaimed author, lecturer and therapist. Her approach builds on what’s working, not fixing what isn’t, as well as purposefully developing dialogue to build and promote positive growth in individuals, groups and organizations. Dolan has presented trainings around the world and in books translated into seven languages.
· “Self-Compassion” will be presented by Kristin Neff April 29. Her workshop provides simple tools for responding in a kind, compassionate way while experiencing painful emotions. Through discussion, meditation and experiential exercise, attendees will learn how to stop being hard on themselves, handle difficult emotions with greater ease and motivate themselves with kindness. Neff has received extensive media coverage in the New York Times, MSNBC, National Public Radio, Reader’s Digest and Psychology Today.
