The Boys & Girls Club of Portage County has announced Grant Hebblewhite as the 2016 Youth of the Year.
Hebblewhite was honored at the Youth of the Year Banquet on March 10.
As part of the honor, Hebblewhite won a $1,475 scholarship from the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors. This scholarship is meant to help him pursue his dreams of becoming a fire-fighter and paramedic for the Portage County area.
“Grant is an exceptional young man and a true leader within the Boys & Girls Club,” said Jordan Derber, director of teen services. “Grant has grown tremendously over the years, developed many passions, and loves to share his talents and dreams with others. We are extremely proud of Grant and all that he has accomplished within, and outside of the club,”
Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. As Boys & Girls Club of America’s premier youth recognition program, the Youth of the Year award recognizes a youth’s outstanding character as a productive, caring, and responsible citizen, as well as for overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. The Youth of the Year award encourages Club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities.
Youth of the Year honorees are shining examples and living proof that great futures start at the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County.
Not only did this event honor Hebblewhite, but also several other outstanding Boys & Girls Club members, staff, board members, and community volunteers. Beverly West, 2015 Board President was honored for her dedication, enthusiasm, and successful leadership and was able to pass the gavel onto incoming Board President, John Leek, owner of JHL Digital Direct.
Business of the Year Award went to Koerten’s Fine Framing & Gifts and JHL Digital Direct for their generous contributions and service throughout the past year. Volunteer of the Year went to Jason and Kimberly Kopplin for their passion of tabletop games that they shared with the teens in our Teen Center.
Staff of the Year award went to Brittany Von Ebers for her help completing a successful capital campaign.
In addition to those awards, each Youth of the Month from the 10 club sites across Portage County were brought up on stage and given their own trophy. Youths of the Month are chosen by Boys & Girls Club staff for having positive attitudes, good work ethics and for being role models and leaders for other Club members.
The event was sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings.
