Vietnam Veteran Ernest Pieske (right) with his wife Marilyn and son Russell, react to a $1,000 check presented to them by students of P.J. Jacobs Junior High.
The funds were raised by students as part of the school namesake’s 147th birthday celebration, and will pay for a trip on the Never Forgotten Honor Flight for both Ernest Pieske, of Stevens Point, and Plover resident Ron Sankey. Sankey wasn’t able to attend the presentation but his son Wayne Sankey appeared in his place.
“Of all the veterans here, and they picked me,” said Pieske, fighting back tears. “I don’t know why.”
Both Pieske and Sankey served in the United States Army. Pieske’s son Russell also served in the army, having recently returned home from Afghanistan.
