For the City Times
The Stevens Point City Band will present its first concert of the summer season at 7 PM on Wednesday, June 8, in the Pfiffner Pioneer Park band shell along the Wisconsin River.
The band, under the direction of Kathryn Kawleski, has over 80 members this season.
“Swing Into Summer” will be the theme as the band starts off its season with a variety of jazz and pop-oriented selections, including “Big Band Favorites”, “The Best of Journey”, “Themes Like Old Times V”, “Jazzin’ It Up”, “The Eagles On Tour” and “The Soulful Sixties”.
“Hogan’s Heroes March” by Jerry Fielding will be the music for the weekly children’s march.
Jeff Dahlseng, band director at Pacelli High School and lead trombone in the city band, will be the evening’s featured soloist, performing “Concerto for Bass Trombone” by Christopher Brubeck. Dahlseng graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 2002 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and performed for 10 years with the US Air Force Bands in Illinois, Alaska and California.
He is currently a member of the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest and enjoys playing locally in the Wausau Symphonic Band, the Honor Flight Band at the Central Wisconsin Airport, the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra and numerous area pit orchestras.
Michele’s Restaurant and Catering will provide food for purchase before and during the concert. Concerts are free and held Wednesday evenings through August 3.
Audience members should bring chairs or blankets for seating. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the gymnasium at St. Paul Lutheran Church and School, 1919 Wyatt Avenue.
