June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The Portage Co. Health Care Center is hosting an event on Wednesday to recognize the victims of elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.
The event will begin on the front lawn of the health care center, 825 Whiting Ave., at 11:30 AM.
According to a news release from the county, ninth-grader Anna Bablitch will read her winning essay, “How I Show Respect To My Elders.”
According to the county, for every reported case of elder abuse, as many of 23 cases go unreported.
The 2014 statistics in Portage County show that there were 39 reports of elder (60+) abuse and 44 percent were reports of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. The majority of the cases were reported by a relative and 31 percent of the cases reported were substantiated.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders.
Residents throughout Portage Co. are asked to wear the color purple on June 15 to show support for elder abuse awareness.
