A 61-year-old Wisconsin Rapids woman died Saturday while canoeing on the Lower Plover River, Stevens Point Police have confirmed.
The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was on a canoe trip along the river going towards Iverson Park, according to Assistant Chief Tony Babl.
Someone with the woman called 911 at 5:02 PM on Saturday, according to police records.
“At some point during the trip she was not feeling good and became unconscious,” Babl said Monday. “Officers were able to get her out of the water right away when they got on the scene.”
Several officers responded to the scene, Babl said, and began to assist with CPR and defibrillation.
According to Assistant Chief Joe Gemza from the Stevens Point Fire Dept., the woman was quickly placed into an ambulance and taken to Ministry St. Michael’s at 5:34 PM.
The woman’s cause of death was not immediately known.
Along with city police and the Portage Co. Ambulance Service, the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office also responded. Crews were on the scene for about 30 minutes.
