Monday, July 11. Co-Ed Softball at Doug’s Sports Pub.
Game One: Airport Bar 11 Team BAMF 4.
Game Two: Kim’s Barrel Inn 14 Sloppy Swats 11.
Let’s do the second game first.
“Kassie McGettigan was the key”: The words of KBI manager Jake Mortimer.
Explanation: The Barrel had a chance to have a big inning in the third.
“We already had four runs in as Gabe Benson, Ashley Leidell, Jake Mortimer and Jack Mortimer all crossed home plate,” said KBI fan Barb Miller.
With Megan Pollack hugging second, the crowd began to shout.
Then Bobby Sullivan singled, a hit without a doubt.
And up to the plate stepped Kassie, the look was in her eyes.
She let the first pitch go, the crowd thought it was wise.
Kassie glared out at the mound, and pointed to the sky.
You just knew the next pitch was really gonna fly.
There was no joy in Mudville, and Jake began to pout. Neither runner scored … mighty Kassie had popped out.
(With apologies to Ernest Thayer).
The Barrel Inn, sponsored by Kim Krayecki, led the Sloppy Swats 4-1 in the top of the third. But the Swats pushed across four runs of their own to take a 5-4 lead. The rally included doubles by Brady Spees, Jesse Schuler, and Rachel Graves. Pat Scheele and Tracy Mixa added singles.
KBI failed to score in the fourth as Brady Spees and Jen Eggleston turned a nifty double play for the Swats. In the bottom half, the Swats got one more as Jake Roy scampered home following singles by Graves, Scheele, and Mixa. The red-hot Scheele had five singles in five trips. 6-4, Swats after four.
KBI tied it at 6-6 in the top of the fifth as Jake Mortimer and Morgan Opper scored thanks to a double by Cody Tokarski. Doubles by Brady Spees and Jesse Schuler in the bottom half gave the Swats a 7-6 lead after five.
KBI went ahead 8-7 in the sixth due to singles by Kevin Hurd, Kassie McGettigan, and Jake Mortimer. Then the Swats came back with four more runs in the see-saw battle behind singles by Jake Roy, Rachel Graves, Scheele, Matt Barden, and Brady Spees’s triple. 11-8 Swats after six.
Down by three, the Barrel put up six more runs in the seventh. Mixed in were a walk to Ashley Leidell, singles by Megan Pollack, Meg Lee (on loan from Airport), Gabe Benson, Jake Mortimer, Jack Mortimer, and doubles from Bobby Sullivan and Danielle Hoover. 14-11 KBI. The Swats managed to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh on base hits by Kelly Barden, Jake Roy, and (yet again) Pat Scheele but Jake Mortimer got the next two hitters to fly out to Morgan Opper and ground out to Bobby Sullivan.
“I’m really proud of my team and I think we’re gonna go all the way,” said Kim Krayecki.

Airport Bar remained unbeaten by clobbering Team BAMF 11-4 in the opening game. Tyler Mader hit a long flyball to right in the fifth, which tipped off the glove of BAMF right-fielder Kimberley Brockman. Mader raced around the bases and was credited with a two-run homer.
“I thought it was a four-base error, but that’s just my opinion,” Airport’s James Marthaler said.
Marthaler blasted a long 3-run homer to left in the 5th and it scattered some chipmunks in the woods behind the Barsness Insurance sign. Team BAMF’s outfielder Graham Edwardson said, “Geez, Marthaler seems to hit one every week — Guess he thinks he’s Harmon Killebrew.”
BAMF leftfielder Erin Laffe went into the trees to get Marthaler’s home-run ball and found another home-run softball that had been given up by Chris Brooks five years ago.
Adam Lee had a great night at the plate for the 7-0 Airport with two doubles and a triple.
Winning pitcher Marthaler shut down the Bammers while allowing only six hits. BAMF’s highlight was when outfielder Christopher Ashland really robbed Josh Swan of extra bases with a great catch in right-center.
AIRPORT BAR STATS: Abby Rottier: single; Adam Lee: triple, two doubles; Meg Lee: single, sac fly; Tyler Mader: double, cheap two-run homer in the fifth; Kelsey Holderman: walk; James Marthaler: two doubles, booming three-run homer in fifth; Stefanie Jackson: two singles, double; Josh Swan: double, single; Kim Schmitz: two singles; Kyle Krieger: single, sac fly, looked like a shiek in the heat.
