An inmate with a violent record has been charged with battery following an incident at the Portage Co. Jail.
Jason Hyatt, 36, was charged with battery by prisoner after he alleged attacked another inmate on Sept. 7. According to the criminal complaint, Hyatt was discussing a medical issue with the jail nurse when he was interrupted by another inmate, a 27-year-old man, which caused Hyatt to become upset.
Hyatt responded by striking the other inmate “many times” with a closed fist in the head and chest, then started to wrestle him on the floor. Hyatt had the other man in a choke hold when corrections officers intervened and separated the two.
According to the nurse, who witnessed the incident, the other inmate did not fight back, but attempted to defend himself by turning away from Hyatt. The other man suffered a headache and chest pain as a result of the attack.
Hyatt was previously arrested in October of 2013 after allegedly beating his girlfriend with a baseball bat, then attempting to drug her before holding her captive over a course of about seven hours in their Plover home.
Hyatt is scheduled to make his initial appearance before Judge Thomas Flugaur on Monday, and remains behind bars.
