Evelyn Gaboda (left) crosses the finish line of the 2017 Run From the Cops 5K on Sept. 23.
At age 91, Gaboda was the oldest participant in the fundraising event for the second year in a row. Organizers for the 5K awarded trophies to the top finishers in each age group, but Gabada jokingly complained about being included in the “70 and Over” bracket.
“From 70 on up, there’s not many of us who do this kind of thing anymore” she said. “But there’s a big difference between 70 and 90. Maybe they need to make a different category.”
Gaboda was one of more than 160 participants on Sept. 23 to brave the sweltering 90+ degree heat for the fourth annual fundraiser. Gaboda began the 5K with her daughter, Betty, but she crossed the finish line with someone else.
When asked where her daughter was, Gaboda waived her hand in the air.
“Oh, she’s back there somewhere,” she said, smiling.
