It was all or nothing for SPASH football Friday night.
The Stevens Point Area Senior High School Panthers entered their final game of regular season play against the 6-1 Fond du Lac Cardinals with a record of 4-4. In order to qualify for the playoffs and continue their 2017 season, they had to win. If they lost, they went home.
They won 26-24.
It was a tight first half. The Cardinals scored first bringing the score to 7-0 with a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back Colton Wasieleski and an extra point by junior kicker Jared Scheberl.
SPASH quickly tied the game up with a long 60-yard TD run by senior running back Colton Kizewski and extra point by senior kicker Keondre Porter.
Fond du Lac ran the clock down to just two seconds before kicking a field goal to earn a 10-7 lead at the end of the first half.
The Panthers ran ahead of the Cardinals at 9:44 in the third quarter with a 50-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Brady Woyak to Kizewski. A missed extra point brought their lead to 13-10.
Wasieleski caught a screen pass from senior QB Jack Cole for a 68-yard TD at 5:42 in the fourth quarter pulling the Cardinals ahead 13-17.
A minute later, Kizewski ran in a 6-yard TD, reversing the lead to 20-17.
The change in lead continued as Wasieleski ran in another 3-yard TD. An extra point by Scheberl advanced Fond du Lac’s lead to 20-24.
With only 10 seconds left in the game, Woyak completed a 11-yard TD pass to sophomore wide receiver Dayne Hoyord to bring the Panthers a victory.
Kizewski led the Panthers’ offense with 325 total offensive yards. The Cardinals were led by Wasieleski with 132 yards.
The Panthers travel to Hudson on Oct. 20 to take on the Raiders at 7 PM in level one of WIAA tournament play. SPASH narrowly defeated Hudson 23-21on Aug. 25.
