To the Editor:
Did you know that our County Board and Executive are considering privatizing and/or closing the Portage County Health Care Center in Stevens Point? Do you think that maybe the constituents of Portage County should have a say in this transaction via a referendum? When we heard that losing this center was even a possibility, we were shocked.
How many of us have had a loved one, neighbor, or friend taken care of at this skilled nursing facility, or have possibly been there for our own needs or may need it in the future?. The Portage County Health Care Center is a highly rated facility, recently receiving a five star rating. What kind of care can we expect from a private owner who looks at the bottom line instead of the people who most need to be there?
We have volunteered at this facility and know first- hand how the staff treats the residents with outstanding care and respect. There are times when the elderly or disabled need this kind of care because they can no longer remain in their homes or need therapy until they can return to their homes. Where will they go in the future if a private company comes in and decides to leave when they can’t turn a profit? Where will you go if you can’t afford to pay for a private care facility? How far will you have to drive to find a place to take you or a loved one?
Portage County has provided this facility to hundreds of people over the course of the 100 plus years it has been in existence. How can the County Board turn their backs on this facility without even hearing from the Portage County residents who pay taxes to help provide for the care of those who need it most.
Please contact your County Board representative before their meeting on Dec. 20 at 5:00 PM. This is on their agenda. They are planning to decide the future of the Portage County Health Care Center and you need to let them know how you feel about losing this wonderful health care facility.
Make your voice heard!
